We awoke this morning, grabbing the Sunday Washington Post from its wrapper and excitedly opening up the Style & Arts section to reveal a feature story on one of our clients and friends, Julie and Andrew (see their sneak peek below!). The Post sent talented photographer Bill O’Leary, who was a pleasure to work with on the wedding day, to photograph the festivities for the newspaper. You can read the write-up and see a few more photos in today’s paper and of course online. It’s a wonderful, compelling love story and we’re thrilled for them both! Look to this space in a couple of weeks for even more images we captured from the wedding day. We can’t wait to share!

Although it rained nearly all day long, just as the ceremony ended the skies cleared and we got this amazingly beautiful afternoon light, just in time for some portraits. Rockin’.

We recently returned from a little out of town trip and found a wonderful sight waiting for us at our front door – a large box with the unmistakeable bright pink and black colors of Georgetown Cupcake! What a sweet treat!!

They are all incredibly yummy, but if I we had to pick a favorite out of the four, we both agree that the chocolate cake with vanilla icing and chocolate sprinkles is the bomb! What’s your favorite flavor at Georgetown Cupcake??

Periodically we’ll be lucky enough to not only be a part of someone’s celebration by documenting it for them, but it will also be someone we know well, as is the case with Elizabeth and Nick and those celebrations couldn’t be sweeter for us. Elizabeth runs the customer service department at Richmond Camera, our wonderful photo lab, and at this point it’s like we’re old friends. The couple had planned a low-key affair for their family and friends on a recent, shall we say moist, Friday afternoon. The rain had been on and off all day so we might have been able to swing a planned outdoor ceremony on the water, but the possibility of precipitation combined with the unusually cold and breezy October afternoon directed us all indoors at Celebrations at the Reservoir.

This worked out well anyway, as their guests were able to come, sit where they would be for the reception, and witness the ceremony to be held in the center of the space with good views for all. Before the ceremony Elizabeth waited patiently outside with her dad while Nick and his groomsmen (who also happened to be his bandmates) greeted arriving guests. They also generally handled their two dachshund-chihuahua mix dogs, Ducky and Bean (love those names!) who served as co-flower dogs and who were escorted by Elizabeth’s junior bridesmaids during the ceremony. Nick was nearly overwhelmed at the start of the ceremony when he saw Elizabeth for the first time, in her gorgeous gown and bird cage veil (the veil later made the rounds among a couple of guests during the reception who posed at various times with it (it has a distinctive look on men as well, as you can imagine)). During their vows, each one of Elizabeth’s bridesmaids were dabbing away tears as Elizabeth was overcome with emotion while holding hands with Nick. I doubt her bridesmaids were the only ones with watery eyes. After the brief ceremony, we quickly did family photos and by this time it was fully raining outside so we didn’t have too many opportunities, but we worked through it well. The two were real troopers and couldn’t have been better subjects.

Once cocktail hour ended everyone was treated to a fun first dance by the couple followed immediately by more emotional dances with Elizabeth and her dad along with Nick and his mom. Dinner that night was catered by Mary Angela’s (Mary A’s for those in the know) and it was so cool! How often do you get your favorite hometown pizzeria to cater your wedding for you? It was a big hit with the guests as they settled in to listen to some wonderful stories and advice from a select few of their attendings plus each of their fathers. Nick’s dad even offered up some helpful tips in the form of, “If Elizabeth says X, she means Y”. Everyone got some good chuckles out of those. Afterwards they turned their attention to the other corner of the room for their cake cutting (and a little bit of off-target debris) before dancing started in earnest that night. Some guests were content to sit and chat with their cohorts, but others were immediately on the dance floor and stayed there for the duration, having an absolute blast. There was a brief break later in the evening for a video slideshow presentation of fun and poignant images of the two of them growing among their families and of the two of them hanging out with friends. There were lots of laughter and many “aaaahhhs”.

All in all, despite the weather it was a perfect evening, and such a fun celebration. Thank you so much, Elizabeth and Nick, for having us document your wedding celebration for you!

The insanely-cute ring bearer and flower girl really were having a great time at the wedding, but we thought this moment was too funny to pass up! It was quite cold and they were real troopers.

This fall has been filled with close calls and just downright downpours of rain! Taylor and Rob were recently in town for some wedding planning and had hoped to get together with us for their engagement portrait session one morning. Up until minutes before we were to start, we thought we’d be rained out, working under the various porticos and porches surrounding the University of Virginia’s grounds. But good weather prevailed, and we had a cloudy, but beautiful morning with which to do their portraits! The two of them were so relaxed and fun; we had a wonderful time with them both. Taylor and Rob, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and can’t wait for your wedding next Spring!

Happy Friday! Well, as you can see, we’ve been sooooo busy with wonderful weddings, fun portrait sessions and touching Day in the Life’s that we haven’t had an opportunity to breathe, much less find some incredible FAB Finds for you. Rest assured, though, Friday’s FAB Finds will return *very* soon and we can’t wait to share some fun and unique finds with you all. In the meantime, we have a fabulous super sneak peek for you today!

Oh, we can’t wait to show you more from this effusive and wonderful couple who just recently celebrated their wedding near their home in Richmond, Virginia. But here are just a few that caught our eye for today. Enjoy your weekend, and we’ll see you next week!

Hearty congratulations go out to Angel and Sean today, who recently tied the knot at Baltimore’s beautifully distinctive Walters Art Museum located near downtown. They had initially found us because Angel happened to have been Sharon and Mike’s maid of honor back in 2004, so it was lovely being a part of their day. It was great fun to see Sharon and Mike too, who have added a set of twins to their family and who also celebrated their fifth anniversary the night before Sean and Angel’s wedding! We had fantastic fall weather the day of the wedding as Angel was getting ready at the Peabody Hotel located across the street from the museum, while Sean and several of his groomsmen arrived dressed with final accouterments to be taken care of. Angel looked stunning, dressed in her Badgley Mischka gown and Jimmy Choos, strolling purposefully across the street with her bridesmaids donned in bright red to reflect the season.

They celebrated with a touching ceremony reflecting both of their religious and cultural backgrounds, and their guests sat with rapt attention while the couple traded vows under the huppa. We even had a few enthusiastic shutterbugs, one of which we captured getting nice and close to the couple during the ceremony. After the ceremony, the sun had long set for the evening, but the couple had their heart set on a few portraits in the adjacent park, so we brought out some supplemental lighting for the two of them with the remaining twilight while their guests enjoyed cocktails among the gallery’s fine art pieces upstairs. Amanda with Occasions Catering, with whom we love working, ensured that dinner looked as good as it tasted–we overheard guests remark at how much they enjoyed the food. We also had a chance to work with Ernest, a low-key and easy-going videographer and editor from Dolce Video. It was fun seeing him again so soon after Miranda & Eric’s wedding just a few weeks prior and a pleasure working with him.

Because of the delicacy of the adjacent sculptures, the gallery disallows use of tripods, light stands, etc. which can create some challenges for people documenting an event, but we were so happy with the great folks at Event Dynamics, who set up the lighting and helped us set up our little lights on their existing stands. Bob Zimmerman, the museum rentals manager, was extremely helpful and generous with his time in allowing us to shoot in various places around the museum to capture all the great shots we wanted throughout the night, so we’re especially grateful for his help.

Nation Band, a rockin’ group that we had heard at weddings before, really got an excited group of guests up and moving throughout the night, including a hora dance in a nod to Sean’s heritage. It was so much fun and they rocked the night away! The happy couple left for their Maui honeymoon after the weekend and we hope it was just as fun and relaxing as their wedding. Thank you both for having us document your wedding, and congratulations!

How cool is our job that we get to stay in touch with the people whose lives we’re initially part of as documentarians of their wedding, and then also get to see them when they start a family? Pretty darn cool, actually. Heather and Brian, whose wedding we shot at Heather’s parents farm back in 2005, are preparing to head to France in a few weeks for Brian’s work and wanted to make sure they got some great photos of their awesome little boy Addison before they left. We met recently on grounds at the beautiful University of Virginia and spent some time together capturing some fun moments from the exceedingly expressive Addison. Heather in particular was a real trooper, being that she was a Hokie now hanging out on UVa’s grounds, but I think we made up for it. It was so wonderful seeing the two of you, Heather and Brian, and meeting Addison for the first time! We look forward to seeing you all again when you return from your time abroad.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year already since we celebrated Laura and Scott’s wedding with them, at the University of Virginia Chapel and reception at Veritas Vineyards. We’ve grown close to the two of them and are so happy to call them friends. We’re absolutely delighted to celebrate their anniversary with them today, and they recently shared with us a few of their favorite images below. Enjoy!
